This model is one of three from Hornby's Birth of the Railways train pack.

Items required: ZIMO MS500R decoder DCCSound premium speaker for Hornby Rocket model

Disassembly:

All work is completed in the tender. The tender is disconnected from the engine.

The 4 pin plug on the underside of tender is disconnected. Tender wheels sets are removed.

Remove the small screw on the printed circuit board. Turn it over and undersolder the wires from TL, TR, M1 & M2 connections.

Turn the tender right way up and remove the barrel top. Disconnect the 6 pin plug. Then remove the barrell bottom half and unsolder the two black wires connected to the brass pickups.

Assembly:

Rework the MS500R decoder by removing the 8 pin plug and all wires except for:

Black (TL)

Red (TR)

Grey (M1)

Orange (M2)

Purple (2x speaker wires)

Place fine heatshrink over the two pickups next to where the decoder will go. This prevents possible shorting.

Carefully position the decoder between the black chassis piece and the tender floor.

Run the 6 wires up into the lower barrell and wire TL & TR both to the tender pickups and to the PCB. Connect the grey and orange motor wires to the PCB.

Refit the small PCB to the underside the chassis. The small screw will require shortening for clearance to the decoder.

Carefuly place all wires and pass the two purple speaker wires up through the top of the barrel where the speaker enclosure will be. The top half of the barrel forms the enclosure volume for the speaker.

Solder the two purple wires to the speaker then place the speaker frame to the speaker and insert both into the barrel top half. A small amount of non permanent glue may be used but may not be necessary.

The barrel is then reassembled, the 4 pin plug reinserted from the engine to tender and engine to tender coupling reassembled.
